The Ohashi family was the originator of shogi (Japanese chess) during the Edo Period. The first-generation Ohashi Sokei (1555-1634), living during the Momoyama to Edo periods, originally was a student of Honinbo Sansa, who was a master of igo (a game of go) as well as the foremost shogi player. In 1612, Sokei was granted a salary by Shogun Tokugawa Ieyasu, and he succeeded Honinbo Sansa as the head of the Shogi Bureau of the government. He was later hailed as the first-generation meijin, or Master Player. Sokei wrote many textbooks on shogi, such as Shogi Zushiki (lit. Illustrated Shogi Games), which contains 50 different winning hands. All successive generations of shogi masters in the Ohashi family inherited the same name of Sokei, and the direct lineage continued up to the 12th generation. The exhibited letter begins with the following wording: “We hereby present the illustration for the Castle Shogi Tournament.” This tournament, held on January 17th, was one of the three major annual events held at Edo Castle. The three shogi originators’ families (the main Ohashi family, the branch line, and the Ito family) each entered select players to be matched against each other in front of the Shogun. This traditional event was started during the reign of the third Shogun, Tokugawa Iemitsu, and became an annual event at the time of Shogun Ietsuna. However, it was discontinued in 1861.This letter is signed by the 11th generation Sokei (1804-1874) and the 12th generation Sokin (1839-1910). Grateful for the Shogun family’s patronage, the two express best wishes for the new year.
