Tachibanaya Sogen (years of birth and death unknown) was a townsman who lived during the early Edo Period. He was known to have studied chanoyu (also sado, tea ceremony), under Governor Kobori Enshu (1579-1647), and when Enshu was not home, it was Sogen who was entrusted with the safekeeping of his master’s tea room. It is said that the “Tanemura Katatsuki” (a treasured Chinese-style caddy that the celebrated painter Kano Tanyu (1602-74) lost during the Great Fire of Meiryaku in 1657) was among the possessions of Tachibanaya Sogen, but not much is known about this man’s life.Sogen addressed this letter to Suminokura Soan (1571-1631), who had asked him to authenticate a tea scoop (chashaku) claimed to have been made by Enshu. With confidence, Sogen assures Soan that it was indeed made by his teacher, a claim only someone like him could make being his master’s confidant. The exhibited brushwork is valuable as Sogen’s only handwritten letter and also for showing his strong interest in tea utensils.
