The high priest of Daitokuji Temple of Rinzai Sect Zen Buddhism, Tenshitsu Sojiku (1605-67) lived during the early Edo Period. He was originally from the Watanabe family of Owari Province (today’s Aichi Prefecture). He studied under Gyokushitsu Sohaku (1572-1641) and became his successor, and was appointed the 190th bishop of Daitokuji in April 1654. At the beginning of this letter, there is a reference to “Choi Well Water,” but since the addressee is unidentifiable, the exact location of the well or spring cannot be known. The high priest thanks the addressee for frequently sending him the precious water from the well. Water is very important to chanoyu, determining the taste of tea brewed with powdered green tea. Oda Uraku, for example, favored water drawn from the Samegai Well in Kyoto. And when Rikyu hosted the Great Tea Party held at Kitano Shrine (in northern Kyoto in 1587), the most grandiose event of the time, water was fetched from a well in the Saihoji Temple compounds in Kyoto – from what was called “Rikyu Well.” Sojiku’s writing style is natural and unaffected, eloquently speaking of this high priest’s personality.
