A noble man of the mid-Edo Period, Konoe Motohiro (1648-1722) was a true blue blood. His father was Regent Konoe Hisatsugu, His father was Regent Konoe Hisatsugu, and his mother was Princess Akiko, the daughter of reigning Emperor Gomizunoo. After successively assuming the highest administrative posts, i.e., Minister of the Interior, Minister of the Right and Minister of the Left, Motohiro was promoted to Regent in 1690 and then reached the highest court post of Chancellor in 1709. Thoroughly trained across all fields of art and literature, Lord Motohiro was particularly famous for his classical Jodaiyo style of calligraphy, patterned after the masterpieces of the Heian Period, and is considered a pioneer in reviving the ancient indigenous form.Accompanying a gift Konoe Motohiro sent on the occasion of Boys’ Day (May 5th), this letter is signed “Moto Hiro,” partly in hiragana and partly in Chinese character, a practice common for letters sent to women. The addressee is, in fact, Lady-in-Waiting Yamanoyi, but Motohiro was writing indirectly to the emperor or a retired emperor. In this case, the intended recipient could be Retired Emperor Gosai or Reigen, but exact identification is difficult. The soft and elegant style is characteristic of Motohiro, a master calligrapher of the ancient Jodaiyo style.
