Priest Nichiyin (1619-92), belonging to the Nichiren Sect of Buddhism during the Edo Period, was actually the son of Hon-ami Kosa (1578-1637), and thus the grandson of Hon-ami Koetsu (1558-1637), the noted multi-talented artist and calligrapher. He became a monk at Honmanji Temple in Kyoto at age 8 and trained under Priest Nissen (1587-1648) of Kuonji Temple. Afterward, he served at various Nichiren temples, including Honpoji and Hokekyoji, until appointed the 24th bishop of Myokakuji Temple in Kyoto. Known as a man of high virtues, Nichiyin came to be regarded with special respect among Nichiren Buddhists, and formed a faction that later played an important role. His calligraphic style resembles that of Koetsu, so closely, in fact, that one cannot readily tell their brushworks apart. This letter is addressed to a Kataoka Rokuzayemon, who was either Nichiyin’s uncle or cousin. The Kataokas were the head family from which Koetsu’s father, Koji, and Koetsu’s heir, Kosa, branched off to form the Hon-ami family. Priest Nichiyin complains to Rokuzayemon about the judgment of a lawsuit involving the leasing and returning of the Takagamine estate. As if to offer evidence to counter the judgment, Nichiyin meticulously draws up a list of points : Koetsu’s ensuring the payment of taxes (in the form of bales of rice), Koetsu’s purchase of a tea container at a reasonable price---, Koetsu’s admirable character, the permission granted Koetsu for free lease of the estate, and more. In fact, the description about the purchase of a tea caddy in Hon-ami Gyojoki (lit. Acts of Hon-ami) serves as supporting evidence for one of Nichiyin’s claims.
