Yodoya Koan (1577-1643) lived during the Edo Period as a well-known renga poet and tea master. He inherited his father’s lumber business and went on to contribute greatly to the development of the mercantile city of Osaka. While a successful businessman, Koan devoted himself to artistic pursuits, befriending contemporary intellectuals like Ishikawa Jozan (1583-1672), Kobori Enshu (1579-1647), Shokado Shojo (1584-1639) and Takuan Soho (1573-1645). The person identified as “Yukan” in the letter was the tea-loving military general Matsui Yukan, who served generals Oda Nobunaga and Toyotomi Hideyoshi during the Azuchi-Momoyama Period. He was known for his mastery of the art of tea. Koan compliments Yukan on the refined tea party held at the latter’s mansion and praises the majestic flower vase named “Old Fox” that he saw there, using the humorous analogy of a monster to describe the vase’s appearance.
