Priest Ryoyu (1333-97) was a Tendai Sect monk during the Nabokucho Period (Period of the Northern and Southern Dynasties) and was the son of Imperial Regent Nijo Kanemoto (1255-1334). He first joined Jissoin Temple in Yamashiro (Kyoto), then moved to Miidera in Ohmi (today’s Shiga) and studied both esoteric (mikkyou) and exoteric (kengyo) Buddhism. Later, he assumed the post of temple official three times, lived in the Joju-in in the compounds of the same temple and finally attained the top position in Buddhist priesthood (liked to archbishop). The reference to “sandan” at the beginning of this letter means the daily practice of reciting Buddhist prayers and incantations. Priests from Enryakuji, Toji and Miidera (also called Onjoji) took charge of different prayers and the chanting of sutra. The letter is a reply to a request made earlier for Ryoyu to lead the prayer. He declined once but was asked again to serve, this time with a promise of advancement in the temple hierarchy. Though this letter does not show who it was addressed to, the Priest Ryoyu writes, “…I have to stop writing now; a visitor has arrived with an imminent business,” which shows that he was more willing to lead the service this time. The letter further discusses procedure at the prayer session in the following manner: “The last day of the upcoming prayer session should correspond with the last day of the pilgrimage and be carried out for seven or 14 days”; “The purpose of the service is to pacify the evil or unsettled spirits”; and “The Buddha’s image used for the prayer session has been made in the traditional manner at the palace’s edokoro (where paintings and painted decoration for the court and nobility were created). Worship at Miidera Temple is dedicated to the God of Fire, Acala.”
