Nijo Mochimichi (1417-93) was a court noble and poet of the Muromachi Period. Born as Nijo Mochimoto (1390-1415)’s second son, Mochimichi had a younger brother who was the Priest Son-no (1432-1514) and a son whose name was Masatsugu (1443-80). Mochimichi climbed the administrative hierarchy and was appointed the regent and clan head for the Nijo family. Five years later, he furthered his career by becoming the Chancellor. After he was given the honorable rank, he retired into priesthood in 1489. He remained active in cultural circles as a member of the higher aristocracy, for example, by participating in the “Nanifune Hyakin” poetry party of 1461, which was attended by Emperor Gohanzaono and Shogun Ashikaga Yoshimasa. There is a record that Mochimichi held “Kanto-en Kakai,” or “poetry composition party during viewing of wisteria blossoms” on March 30 of 1481 (in Nobutane Kyo Ki, or Chronicles by Lord Nobutane).Although the exact content of the letter is not easy to interpret, it seems to be about Mochimichi’s agreement to the seating arrangement for some kind of palace function. Mochimichi wrote that he wanted to be informed should there be any change. In this letter, one can surmise the ancient ways of doing things always followed precedence and accepted practices and usages.
