Princely Priest Sonyin (1715-39) was the 18th son of Emperor Reigen (1654-1732). Although he was adopted by Tokugawa Yoshimune in 1726, he was proclaimed imperial prince in 1727, resulting in the changing of his name to Hidesada. However, showing no intent on a political career, he entered a Buddhist temple the same year and was given an official administrative title. There Sonyin died in 1739 at the young age of 25.In this letter, Prince Sonyin apologies for the lack of correspondence and then asks the addressee, who was his older brother Princely Priest Sonsho (1699-1746), to write poems on six pieces of decorated shikishi paper by October 10th. His writing style much like that of his father, Emperor Reigen, the prince probably wrote this letter when he was around 20 years of age, after he had become a monk.
