The Prince Nagaya Manuscripts refers to the 600-volume copies of the first section of the Dai-Hannyakyo (Sutra of the Great Perfection of Wisdom; Sk. Mahaprajnaparamita Sutra; Jp. Hannya Haramitsu or Hannya Haramitta), whose production was initiated as a votive wish by Prince Nagaya (684-729), the son of Prince Takechi (654?-696), in 712 (Wado Era) and 728 (Jingi Era). This is the later Jingi-era manuscripts.Rendered in a typical unlined Scripture-copying style, the Prince Nagaya Manuscripts are one of the well-known ancient manuscripts, representative of the Nara Period. The austere and stable writing shows the strong influence of the continental civilization of the Sui and Tang dynasties on the Japanese court. This was formerly in the collection of Lord Inoue Kaoru (1836-1915), one of the greatest Meiji Era statesmen of modern Japan.
