Gokyogoku Yoshitsune (1169-1206) was grandson to Fujiwara-no-Tadamichi (1097-1164) and second son to Fujiwara-no-Kanezane (1149-1207). After assuming the important administrative positions of Minister of the Center, and Minister of the Left, he became imperial regent at the age of 34 and Chancellor at age 36. While being an able politician, he was also one of the representative cultured intellectuals of the era. As was correctly assessed by the Priest Jien (1155-1225), his uncle, in his private interpretative history book, Gukan Sho, Yoshitsune excelled both in Chinese and Japanese poetry. His calligraphy is based on the Hosshoji School developed by his grandfather Tadamichi, but his own smartly flowing style with its high center of gravity, later dubbed the Gokyogoku School of writing, attracted many followers. At the time of writing of this letter, Yoshitsune (age 36) was Minister of the Left. It is addressed to Fujiwara-no-Tadatsune (age 32), who was Provisional Middle Counselor. Concerned about the coming-of-age celebration of his second son, Nori-ie (age 11), Yoshitsune writes, “Due to Emperor Tsuchimikado’s cold, I am wondering if we should cancel Nori-ie’s visit to the Imperial Palace for an audience with His Majesty. In the past, when Fujiwara Moromichi (1062-99) was celebrating his coming-of-age(in 1022), he was not able to visit the palace due to Princess Toshiko’s illness. I would like to discuss the matter with you whether or not we should follow that precedence.”Aristocrats and court nobles sought precedence in every affair they conducted. Faced with an unexpected turn of events, as shown in the letter, Yoshitsune resorted to past instances for carrying out a traditional ceremony.
