四肢はないが、鰐を模した彫像と推定できる。面長で特に吻部が長大であること、上向きの外鼻孔や突出した目、剥き出しの歯列の 3 点が表現されていることから鰐を模した彫像と推定できる。胴体が扁平で短いので、水面を泳ぐ鰐を表現したのかもしれない。尾の付け根付近には通し孔があり、屋内に吊り下げられていたと思われる。橙色・白色顔料が退色し、全体に黒ずんでおり、屋内の炉端で燻された可能性がある。頸部と胴体で鱗板の配列や大きさを彫り分けており、製作者が日頃から鰐をよく観察していたことが伺える。ニューギニアの儀礼小屋では一般的に様々な護符が保管されており、本資料もその１例と考えてよい。鰐はトーテム動物の一種として神話に語られ、造形物に表現される。北東部のセピック川流域では、若者たちの通過儀礼として胸や肩、背中の肌を斑点状に削ぐことで、身体に鰐の鱗板を精緻に表現してきたことが知られる。彼らにとって鰐は力と権威の源であり、男性性の象徴でもある。
