Kokei Sochin (1532-97) was a priest affiliated with the Daitokuji of the Rinzai sect Buddhism, who came from the military family of Asakura in Echizen (Fukui Prefecture). After going up to Kyoto, he became a disciple of Shorei Sokin (1505-1583), the 107th bishop of the Daitokuji Temple, and later in 1573, Emperor Ohgimachi (1517-93) appointed him to be the 117th bishop of the said temple. He later served as the 5th bishop of the Nanshuji Temple in the port city of Sakai (Osaka Prefecture). Generalissimo Toyotomi Hideyoshi (1536-98) long embraced the Daitokuji and when he opened the Soken-In in the compounds of this temple in honor of his assassinated master, Lord Oda Nobunaga (1534-82), Sochin was invited to be the temple’s first bishop. He also officiated as priest at Nobunaga’s funeral. Later he fell victim of a false charge made by Lord Ishida Mitsunari (1560-1600) and was exiled to Hakata (in northern Kyushu), but returned to Kyoto after a pardon. After his return to the Daitokuji, he retired to live in a small Buddhist residence, Joraku-An, enjoying the life of chanoyu (tea ceremony) and earned himself a reputation for being a tea connoisseur through friendships with Sen-no-Rikyu (1522-91), Furuta Oribe (1543-1615) and other prominent tea masters. In 1596, Emperor Goyozei (1571-1617) bestowed upon Sochin the title of Daiji-Kosho-Zenji but he died at the age of 66 in the following year. The phrase appearing at the beginning was quoted from a poem by Su Shi (also Su Dongpo, Jp: So Shoku). It means “an old friend who came to visit in the rain comes no more.” Kokei expresses his loneliness by attaching his poem to a letter addressed to an old-time friend.
