Chuho So-u was born in Yamashiro (Kyoto) and commenced his Buddhist training at an early age and trained under the 406th bishop of the Daitokuji temple, Sokudo Soki (1738-1795). Later, So-u was appointed the 418th bishop of the said temple. He served at the Tokaiji in Edo (Tokyo), assuming a post for handling temple affairs on alternate assignments on an arrangement known as ‘rinbanshiki’. In his last years, he lived, almost hermit-like, at the Hoshun-In, one of the many structures associated with the Daitokuji. He was honored with the title of Daiko-Shinsho-Zenji. The four characters shown here are Zen terms comprising a terse expression of the chanoyu (way of tea) spirit. The first two characters, pronounced as ‘wa’ (harmony) and ‘kei’ (respect), show the four elements which are considered the essence in hosting a tea guest, and the next two characters, denoting ‘sei’ (purity) and ‘jaku’ (tranquility), are concerned with the tea garden, room or utensils. From the signature, it is obvious that this brushwork was written after Chuho So-u’s retirement from the Daitokuji, where he had been promoted to the rank of ‘Zen-Daitoku’ (lit. ‘formerly of Daitokuji’). The title of Daiko-Shinsho-Zenji accompanying the signature is another clue to determine the time of production. Since it was in 1835 that Chuho So-u was granted this honorary title at the age of 76, and since he died at age 79, this calligraphy was written sometime during those three years. Although it was one of the very last works executed by Chuho So-u, the master’s powerful hand is filled with magnanimity.
