A complete set of copies of Buddhist scriptures produced or collected and safeguarded by the Horyuji Temple toward the latter Heian Period is known as Horyuji Issaikyo (“Issaikyo” means a full set of all Buddhist scriptures.) In keeping with the ongoing trend at other Buddhist temples for revamping themselves into academic institutions, the Horyuji initiated this ambitious undertaking. Each volume in this collection is stamped “Horyuji Issaikyo” in black ink. An astounding 7,000 volumes make up this collection, far more than the usual 5,048 volumes of the Buddhist scriptures. Moreover, other manuscripts were added from time to time to further supplement the original grand collection. The exhibit is an example of such later additions. The rigid and firmly-structured writing style proves it was produced during the early Nara Period (8th C). The Abhidharma Discourse Revealing the Essential Teachings, consisting of 40 volumes, was translated from Sanskrit into Chinese by the Tang Dynasty priest Genjo (Ch. Xuanzan or Hsuan-Tsang: 602-664).
