The Rinzai sect Zen priest, Takuan Soho (1573-1645), was originally from Izushi in Tajima (Hyogo Pref.). He took a tonsure early at his birthplace and moved up to train at the Daitokuji Temple in Kyoto under Shun-oku So-en (1529-1611). Later he inherited the Buddhist order of Itto Shoteki (1539-1612) and was promoted to become the 153rd bishop of the Daitokuji. In 1627, he became entangled in a court-military conflict involving Emperor Gomizuno-o (1596-1680) and was exiled to Dewa Kaminoyama (Yamagata Pref.). He returned to Edo after being pardoned and earning devotions from Tokugawa Iemitsu (1604-51), the third Shogun of the Tokugawa military government, he established the Tokaiji Temple in Shinagawa, Edo (Tokyo). Takuan Soho died at the age of 73 in 1645. Emperor Gomizuno-o and Tokugawa Iemitsu deeply embraced Buddhism under Takuan Soho’s guidance. He was also a man of cultivated taste thoroughly trained in poetry and haiku composition as well as chanoyu, the way of tea. This exhibition shows a calligraphed memorandum the Reverend Takuan wrote for some unknown devotee. It contains excerpts from the collections of sermons (Daito Kokushi Goroku) by Daito Kokushi (1282-1337), who founded the Daitokuji and was known as Shuho Myocho in his lifetime, and from another collection of sermons by Tetto Giko (1295-1369), the second bishop of Daitokuji.
