Nichi-in was Hon-ami Koetsu’s grandson. His common name was Gentsu and his pseudonym, Hontsu-in. He studied under the Preist Nissen, the 26th bishop of the Minobu-San Kuonji Temple, and then served as head priest at the Honpoji in Kyoto, Hokekyoji in Simousa-Nakayama (Chiba Prefecture), and Myokakuji in Kyoto. Nichi-in, his disciple Nichiyo, and Nichiyo’s disciple Nittatsu, were collectively called ‘In-Yo-Tatsu’as they formed an influential faction in the Nichiren-sect of Buddhism. Nichi-in exhibits the calligraphy style of his grandfather Koetsu. The powerful strokes are hardly distinguishable from those of Koetsu and this hanging scroll is a testimony to the close relationship maintained between Koetsu and Nichi-in.The two Chinese characters ‘en-don’ found at the beginning of the verse mean ‘fully satisfied and sufficient’ like a full circle within which enlightenment will be gained instantly. This teaching is described in Volume 1 of the 20-volume Mohe Zhiguan (Jp. Maka-Shikan; ‘Great Contemplation’), one of the three major works written by the originator of the Tendai-sect of Buddhism, Tiantai Zhiyi (Jp. Tendai Chigi; 538-597). Tiantai taught three forms of meditative contemplation to experience the Buddhist way, which are, Jinaci Zhiguan (Jp. zenji-shikan), Buding Zhiguan (Jap. fujo-shikan) and Yuandun Zhiguan (Jp. endon-shikan). The last form requires meditative contemplation focused on ‘jisso’, or true nature detached from mortality and natural extinction of all things existing in our world. As a monk of the Nichiren sect, Nichi-in had a deep faith in the Lotus Sutra, as proven by the calligraphy of the ‘endon-shikan’ exhibited in this work.
