The red seal of “Jingoji Temple” stamped at the bottom of the first line of this handscroll shows that this extant piece was originally part of the manuscripts known as the “Jingoji Sutra” consisting of 5048 handscrolls. An Issaikyo (a complete set of scriptures), it was copied in gold ink on dark-blue paper toward the end of the Heian Period. Legend has it that a set of documents (Jingoji Temple Documents) was dedicated to Jingoji Temple in Takao, Kyoto, in 1185 by Retired Emperor GoShirakawa (1127-92) in fulfillment of a wish made by the late Retired Emperor Toba (1103-56). However, the calligraphic style of the sutra, its design, pictures on the flyleaf, and the decoration prove that this handscroll was created before the end of the 12th century. Perusing the records concerning Issaikyo, one will find the exhibited scroll associated with the dedication of the “Issaikyo Sutra Manuscripts in Gold Characters” commissioned by Bitokumon-In (also Fujiwara-no-Nariko, the consort of Retired Emperor Toba, 1117-60) on the occasion of a religious service held at Hosshoji Temple. The cover of the scroll is decorated with peonies and lotus flowers in a Chinese arabesque pattern of gold and silver mud, while the flyleaf depicts Buddha’s laws. Although the pictures were drawn by professional Buddhist artists of the day, they show some of the Yamato-e painting techniques indigenous to Japan. As such, the exhibited piece is of great interest in terms of religious art history. The plectrum-shaped gild bronze roller of the scroll also speaks of the artistic heights reached by the craftsmen of the era.
