Indicative of the flourishing Buddhist culture of Tang China, this statue of Guanyin, the Bodhisattva Avalokitesvara, is seated, in a state of contemplation, on a lotus pedestal in what is known as a ‘half cross-ledged’ pose – the left leg bent and resting on the pedestal, the right placed further down on the stand. With the head tilting slightly to the left, the rouded face – eyes half closed and a smile hovering on the lips – is both warm and extremely graceful. Strings of jewels decorate the plump breast, and the figure wears a diadem over a tall coil of hair, or chignon, with failing locks draping behind the shoulder. The left hand is missing. The delicate carving of the bodhisattva itself contrasts strongly with the coarser, more powerful chiselwork of the lotus pedestal.
