Nanka Genko (1538-1604), the Zen monk, belonged to the Myoshin lineage and originally hailed from Mino (Gifu Pref.). He entered the priesthood by following Hoshuku Sotei (birth and death unknown). After studying at the Sufukuji in Mino, then at the Erinji in Kai (Yamanashi Pref.), he became successor to the Reverend Kaisen Joki (?-1582). In 1570, Nanka Genko became the monk of the Myoshinji at the age of 33, thereafter returning to serve at this temple several times. Several powerful military patrons including Lord Oda Nobunaga (1534-82) and Toyotomi Hideyoshi (1536-98) became devoted followers, and the latter particularly adored Nanka Genko’s Zen taste. Another devoted worshipper was Emperor Goyozei (1571-1617), who later bestowed Genko the posthumous title of Joe-Enmyo-Kokushi. Nanka Genko’s book is entitled Kyohaku Roku named after his pseudonym of Kyohaku. This exhibit shows an inscription rendered by Nanka Genko in the space above the portrait of the Generalissimo Toyotomi Hideyoshi. The signature shows that the calligraphy was executed by the former head priest of the Myoshinji, located in Hanazono, Kyoto. So perhaps it was written after Genko’s transfer to the Myokoji in Owari (Nagoya). Hideyoshi died at the age of 60 at the Fushimi Castle on August 18, 1598, but his portraits were made before and after his death. The inscription contains a wish for longevity, so the inscription was obviously added to the portrait in the generalissimo’s lifetime. The original portrait of Hideyoshi with Genko’s inscription has been preserved at the Kodaiji, Kyoto (color on silk, important cultural asset), so this exhibit is likely to be a copy that Genko kept for his own reference.
