この金銅正観音像は、鎌倉時代の傑出した作品である。鏡面も仏像も、一つの鋳型で鋳造したもので、それに後から鍍金を加えた精妙なもの。正観音像は諸観音菩薩像の根本たる存在で、慈悲をつかさどり、信仰の衆生を広く救済するという。ことに平安時代に貴族を中心として尊崇された仏像である。この懸仏は、裏面に彫銘が施されており、「敬白／奉鋳正観音御躰一躰／羽黒堂／建長八年二月日武部正恒敬白」とある。「羽黒堂」というのは羽黒山のことで、月山・湯殿山とともに出羽三山の一つに数えられる。鎌倉時代から修験道の道場として山伏の根拠地であった。その頂上に出羽三山合祀社として祀られるのが羽黒堂で、ここに施入されたことが知られる。建長８年〈1256〉２月、武部正恒（未詳）によって発注奉納された事情を明らかにする。年記を伴う懸仏としては古い作例。その作行の優秀性とともに、稀有な仏教美術品として高い価値を発揮するもの。
