Forehead Head Eye Sculpture Jaw

Since ancient times in Japan, Gods have been the subject of religious faith and ethnic beliefs. People have been in awe of Gods and believed it is the Gods that bring fortune to the world and protect or punish people when necessary. Religious rites in Japan are believed to have been started in Ise Shrine. Shinzo, the Image of God, is enshrined there. At the beginning of the 10th century, in the Heian period, people started to enshrine a couple of Shinzo in the shape of male and female. This is one of those images of a male God. With the armes folded under the clothes, its eyes closed tightly, and with a large crown on the head, the image is filled with mysterious charm. The image is carved out of one log of Japanese cypress, and the sculpture shows simple but powerful beauty.
