観音菩薩は、大乗仏教で広く信仰され、民衆に親しまれた菩薩である。とくに『法華経』「普門品」（通称『観音経』）では、宗教的救済に任ずる大慈大悲の菩薩であることを強調し、危機の際にはその名号を唱えるだけで救われるとか、種々に身を変じて救済に尽くす（三十三身）と説く。これは、観音菩薩を立像であらわしたもの。背面部分が前後はぎの寄木造になっている。
