Shotoku Taishi (Prince Shotoku, 574-662) was a son of Emperor Yomei (?-587). His mother was Ananobe no Hashihito no Himemiko (?-621, Consort of emperor Kimmei). He was nominated Heir Apparent to his aunt the Empress Regnant Suiko, as such being active in administrating affairs of the state in the capacity of the Prince Regnant. He was responsible for various political innovations while keeping close contact with the Silla dynasty of Korea and the Sui dynasty of China. Notable among his innovations were the Regulations for the Twelve Court Ranks and Their Costumes, and the Constitution in Seventeen Articles, which established basic rules for sovereign-and-vassal relationships in this country. He was also an eager adherent to Buddhist faith and built the Horyu-ji temple (Nara), the Shitenno-ji temple (Osaka) and many other Buddhist temples. He authored the Sangyo Gisho (Semantic Commentary on the Three Sutras), the first book of scholarly discussions on Buddhism ever written by a Japanese. The existing images of Shotoku Taishi are in various forms: Namu-butsu, Koyo-zo (Filial Piety form, representing him at sixteen in prayers for recovery of his father from illness), Shoman-gyo Kosan (Giving Lecture on the Srimaladevi Sutra in his youth), Shotoku Taishizo (Portrait of Shotoku Taishi, collection of the Imperial Household Agency), and so on. The statue reproduced here is in the form known as Namu-butsu (Invocation on the Buddha), executed mainly in wood carving. It snows the Taishi according to the legendary tale that the prince at the age of two clasped his hands in prayers and chanted “Namu-butsu,” Namu being an accosting child, half naked and wearing a culottes-type skirt.
