- Human body Sculpture Statue Wood Artifact
This wooden statue, once a treasured possession of the painter Takeuchi Seiho (1864-1942), is a representative example of Buddhist sculpture from the Tang period (618-907). Carved from a single block of wood, the bodhisattva stands with his right hand raised to his chest, the fingers holding a peach, while the left hand is by his side, a scarf-like garment draped through the fingers. The narrow crescent eyebrows, almond-shaped eyes and full cheeks are all features of a bodhisattva who has pledged to extend salvation to all mankind through his supreme mercy and compassion. The high level of craftsmanship has rendered the metal fastening rings on the jewel strings extremely realistic. The crown, decorated with a floral pattern, is highly emblematic.
