この金剛杵の姿は、月の兎が餅をつく杵の形に似た把の両端に、鈷と呼ばれる鋭い刃をつけたもので、これは鈷の部分が、中鈷と四周の脇鈷四つにより五鈷をなすことから五鈷杵と呼ばれる。密教法具の中でもとりわけ五鈷杵は、五部（金剛界の仏・菩薩の五つのグループ。仏部・金剛部・宝部・蓮華部・羯磨部）・五智（仏の五種の智恵、大日如来の智を五種に分けたもの）のシンボルとして用いられ、また、五仏（密教の曼陀羅で、中央の大日如来とその四方にある四仏）の方向を表わしているともいわれている。それぞれ細緻な作りと力強いたくましさが一種いいがたい金工美を発揮している。
