これは金剛杵である。その姿は月の兎が餅をつく杵の形に似た把の両端に、鈷と呼ばれる鋭い刀をつけたもので、密教独特の法具である。もともと古代インドの武器であったものが、人間の心の中の煩悩を破壊するという象徴的意味を託して、密教では法具として尊重されるようになった。特に五鈷杵は、五部（金剛界の仏・菩薩の五つのグループ。仏部・金剛部宝部・蓮華部・羯磨部）・五智（仏の五種の智恵、大日如来の智を五種に分けたもの）のシンボルとして用いられ、また、五仏（密教の曼陀羅で、中央の大日如来とその四方にある四仏）の方向を表わしているともいわれている。他に、鈷の部分が一本の独鈷杵、三本の三鈷杵などがある。それぞれ細緻な作りと力強いたくましさが一種いいがたい金工美を発揮している。
