Suma is located on the border between the ancient provinces of Settsu and Harima and was particularly noted for its landscape dotted with saltpans where seamen made salt by scorching seaweed soaked with seawater. The region was immortalized in Japanese literature when the main character in The Tale of Genji (Jap. Genji Monogatari), Hikaru Genji, was exiled to Suma, weary of life in the capital. This mirror depicts pines lined along the seashore and three cranes. It could have been inspired by an ancient poem about pine trees in Suma. Or, it could be incorporating images of the nearby town of Takasago, noted for its beautiful beaches covered by pines.
