Handled mirrors became mainstream during the Edo Period, with circular mirrors being made for ceremonial occasions such as weddings or shrine dedications. As such, these formal mirrors carried decorations with auspicious symbols: the tortoise-shaped central knob and the pine-and-crane motif, both widely believed to bring good luck.
