In mirror designs, a goose is often depicted along with reeds, but as shown in this mirror, a goose motif is sometimes combined with the pine, perhaps inspired by waka poems. In early autumn, large flocks of geese migrate to Japan from northern countries, so their arrival heralds a new season. The distant cries of these birds were considered “elegantly gloomy,” inspiring poetry in the listener’s mind. The sound of wind blowing through the boughs of pine trees also conveys sad and forlorn moods. This explains why a goose is depicted with a pine tree in this mirror – the moods they conjure up are a perfect match.
