The Kaifuso, a collection of Chinese-style poems written and compiled in the 8th c., contains several poems that sing of the fluttering of butterflies. The Manyoshu (lit. “Collection of Ten Thousand Leaves”), a contemporary collection of Japanese-style poems, however, does not have any poems referring to butterflies. One can assume that appreciating the flutter of this insect was a Chinese pursuit. Although the butterfly motif was used in early-day mirrors, it was depicted almost like an accessory to other main motifs, such as birds and flowers. It was after the Kamakura Period and onward that the butterfly motif was used as a mirror decoration in its own right.
