Yatsuhashi (lit. “eight bridges”) was the name of a place that once existed near today’s Chiryu City in Aichi Prefecture where eight bridges spanned the river. The locality owes its fame to The Tale of Ise (Jap. Ise Monogatari). In Chapter 9, “Descending to the Eastern Lands,” Ariwara-no-Narihira, an ancient nobleman, and his entourage reach the Yatsuhashi area and contemplate the elegant irises in full bloom. Just as in this famous story, this mirror’s theme is irises.
