Grape and grapevine motifs were introduced into Japan from China during the Nara Period, but their popularity faded gradually. It was during the Momoyama Period when these motifs revived, as wine began to be imported into Japan from southern countries. (Foreign trade had been strictly prohibited during the Edo Period, except through certain routes.) The grapevine-and-squirrel combination, seen here, made its appearance on other artifacts but not so on mirrors until the mid-Edo Period.
