Against a backdrop of iris, Japanese globeflower, and a thatched-roof hut, the characters spelling “Kakitsubata” (iris) are inscribed. The viewer is immediately reminded of the ancient poem by Ki-no-Tsurayuki that plays on the alliteration of kakitsubata and kaki (fence): “I wish for someone with whom to view the irises bloom before they fade. The flowers remind me of the fence separating your home from mine” (in Anthology of Japanese and Chinese Poems for Recitation, Jap. Wakan Roeishu; also in Collection of Tsurayuki’s Poems, or Tsurayuki-shu). A very similar design but with the inscription “Tamagawa” is seen on a mirror preserved at Horyuji Temple.
