Foreign creatures meant “beasts of other lands,” and in the case of this mirror, it denotes the lion. This mirror uses lion and grape-arabesque motifs, both of which were introduced into China from the West. The popularity of these patterns in typical Tang Dynasty mirrors is evidence of the cosmopolitan nature of China during this era.
