Geometrical designs began to appear in the mid-Kamakura Period. While these new designs were popular in wide-ranging arts and crafts, the more representative mirror motif was a series of hexagonal shapes, modeled after the tortoise shell. Here, each tortoise shell embraces a chrysanthemum motif.
