平安時代後期頃から和鏡独自の文様表現が見られるようになるが、鎌倉時代に入ると、より複雑な表現がなされるようになる。平安時代以来の植物・鳥類の文様を踏襲しつつ、そこにさらなる表現を付け加えていく。代表的なのは、籬・桧垣などの垣根や、洲浜の情景を配した文様であり、こうした表現が加わることにより、写生的・絵画的な文様となる。
