The inscription “Best in the Nation Fujii Mitsushige” is clearly visible on this mirror. After the Genwa and Kanyei eras (1615-1644), the use of the honorific mark “Best in the Nation” followed by the craftsman’s full name became popular. Originally, this title required authorization, but there was widespread abuse. The situation became so bad that a ban was issued in 1682.
