A pair of sparrows face each other on a geometrical, diagonal grid patterns drawn by double lines. It is generally believed that geometrical designs became fashionable from the late Kamakura Period to the Nambokucho (Southern-and-Northern Dynasties) Period. Compared with mirrors from these eras, the design on the exhibited mirror is less decorative and may be traced to an earlier era. The thin base of the mirror shares features of Heian mirrors. The mirror was claimed to have been excavated from the ruins of Dazaifu, the ancient administrative headquarters ruling the entire Kyushu region.
