Toward the top of this mirror is a depiction of Aizen Myo-o (Sanskrit: Ragaraja), a popular motif during the Muromachi Period. The three-eyed, six-armed Aizen Myo-o wears a lion-crown and is painted red with a prominent expression of anger on its face. It was originally a Hindi deity but was later incorporated into Esoteric Shingon-sect Buddhism in Japan, to be worshipped as deity of love and eros. Aizen Myo-o was worshipped especially by women who believed in the mirror’s charm to fulfill their amorous love.
