The “five sacred mountains” denote the five most famous and much revered mountains in China, consisting of the East, West, North, South and Central peaks. Arranged in the four directions with one at the center, these mountains were often symbolically used as charms in Taoism. They were believed to ward off bad luck, especially for people climbing these sacred heights.
