Against a backdrop of spiraling clouds flies a dragon with its mouth and claws wide open. Mirrors in this category were usually crafted into hollyhock-shaped hexagonal or octagonal styles, as exemplified by this mirror. Tang-era poets such as Li Po (also Li Bai) and Meng Haoran sang about mirrors with coiled-dragon motifs in their poems, so one can assume that such mirrors were popular in the heydays of the Tang Dynasty, during the reign of Emperor Xuanzong.
