The gilding technique used in this mirror appeared and developed rapidly toward the latter half of the Spring and Autumn Period through Warring States Period, obviously under the influence of the Skythai (or Scythae) Culture (a group of nomadic tribes who lived along the Black Sea’s northern shores). Gold was melted in mercury to produce an amalgam, which was then applied to the surface of copperware. When heated, the mercury would evaporate, thus gilding the object. By the Former Han Dynasty, many artifacts were beautifully decorated by gilding, and mirrors were no exception.
