Up until the mid-Kamakura Period, the central knob of mirrors was shaped like a flower, such as the chrysanthemum or the pistil or stamens of another flower, but they were gradually replaced by tortoise-shaped knobs in the Muromachi Period. While the paired-bird motif had long been popular, birds depicted facing each other in the space above the knob is characteristic of Muromachi mirrors. And where crane motifs are used, the bird’s beak almost always touches the tortoise-shaped central knob.
