流れる水の中に菊花を散らした文様である。室町時代には謡曲にもなった、菊慈童（きくじどう）の説話に関係があるのかもしれない。周王に寵愛されていた慈童は、菊の露がしたたり落ちてできた川の水を飲んで、不老不死になったという。
