Kamakura mirrors emulated Heian mirror designs in depicting plants and birds, but these motifs became more prominently expressed with thicker, raised lines in high relief. While designs were basically drawn with a single spatula during the Heian Period, many different spatulas were used during the Kamakura Period, giving the resulting images a three-dimensional quality. The thicker edge, along with the prominent boundary between the inner and the outer bands, is also characteristic of the Kamakura Period.
