During the Tang Dynasty, many innovations were made in mirror casting. One of them is the treating of lacquered backs with gold and silver foils. In this technique, thin foils were first applied to a mirror’s back, which was then covered with lacquer. By carefully polishing off the thin layer of lacquer, craftsmen were able to resurface the gold and silver designs. In other techniques, like this mirror, low-relief designs were gilded with gold or silver foils.
