There was once a popular weaving technique in which patterns of multicolored threads were woven in low relief over a background of fabric patterns. On these so-called “double-technique brocades,” circular decorative designs were most popular, mainly depicting cranes, butterflies, chrysanthemums, or wisteria, and these favorite motifs were gradually incorporated into mirrors. The paired cranes and butterflies in circular patterns are defined as “contraposed-crane” and “contraposed-butterfly” motifs, respectively.
