Imperial oxcart wheel motifs are scattered across this mirror. Lavishly decorated oxcarts were used during the Heian Period as a favored means of transport for the nobility, but they were replaced by palanquins during the Kamakura, Southern-and-Northern Dynasties, and Muromachi periods. Reminiscent of the splendor of ancient dynasties, imperial oxcarts are often called Genji-guruma, or Genji-carts, after The Tale of Genji (Jap. Genji Monogatari), one of the most famous accounts of the ancient court.
