It was toward the latter Heian Period that mirrors with uniquely Japanese motifs made their first appearance. Mirror crafting was also popular during the Kamakura Period, when more intricate designs began to appear. While based on the plant-and-bird motifs of the preceding Heian Period, Kamakura mirrors carried new forms of expression. Most representative motifs include bamboo fences, roughly-woven bamboo fences, and slat fences, as well as landscapes with sandbars. These elements made the designs of Japanese mirrors more realistic and pictorial.
